Russia and Japan: the results of cooperation in 2013

19 of March, 2014. Deputy Minister of economic development of Russia Alexei Likhachev, who is also currently head of delegation at the sixth Russian-Japanese investment forum that opened on March 19 in Tokyo, stated that by the end of 2013, Japan had risen to seventh place in the list of trading partners of the Russian Federation. While Japan is ahead of countries such as Italy, Turkey and the USA.

Alexey Likhachev also noted that it is planned to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, especially in the area of knowledge-intensive industries.

At the opening of the forum was read out the message of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In which he expressed confidence in the necessity of development of relations between the two countries, and noted that relations between Japan and Russia over the past year has increased and reached a whole new level. The Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abs also noted the strengthening of relations. Sinzu the ACP stressed that relations between countries are developing not only in the traditional key (in energy), but also in the field of medicine, culture, etc.

The delegation from Russia included more than 200 people. All of them – representatives of leading ministries, large companies (including the head of Rosneft and first Vice-President of JSC "Transneft"). The delegation from Japan consists of the heads of economic ministries, major corporations (including Mitsui, Mitsubishi Motors, Toshiba). The total number of participants from both countries reaches 700 people.

The programme of discussions on March 19, questions on improvement of investment climate in Russia, the opening of new areas of cooperation. Planned round tables on the most topical issues of relations between the countries. In particular, it is planned to discuss issues in the field of energy supply, the automotive industry, technological innovation, medicine and transport.

At the end of the forum it is planned to sign investment agreements in the sphere of cooperation between the two countries.

A bit of history

Established the Russian-Japanese investment forum was in 2006. Its first meeting was held in St. Petersburg. The last meeting of the forum took place in the summer of 2012 in Kazan. As a result of that forum was signed several important investment agreements, including memoranda for the production of polyester fabrics in Tatarstan, the agreement on construction of wood-chemical complex in the Krasnoyarsk territory, the agreement on creation of far East energy facilities, etc.
