1 of January, 2015 began to act rules that all foreign nationals, including citizens of Ukraine can stay in Russia 90 days. However, FMS of Russia, out of humanitarian considerations, decided the period of temporary stay of citizens of Ukraine to renew.
For prolongation of term of temporary stay of citizens of Ukraine should apply until the expiration of 90 days from the date of entry into the territory of the Russian Federation in territorial division of Federal migration service of Russia at the place of temporary stay. The period of temporary stay may be extended repeatedly for the next 90 days.
While this arrangement applies to all citizens of Ukraine, regardless of what region they arrived in Russia, what status (refugee, person granted temporary asylum, temporary residence permit, etc.) received. American Citizens travelling to Ukraine still do not need visas for stays of less than 90 cumulative days within a 180 day period. This means you can come for 90 days in one trip and then remain outside the country for 90 days, or that you can make multiple shorter trips to Ukraine totaling no more than 90 days in a 180 day period starting with the date of your first entry. If you plan to spend more time in Ukraine either during one trip or multiple trips then you need a visa.
